Telecom contract auto-renewal: what it is and how to stop it.
Many business phone, internet and data center contracts renew on their own unless you give written notice inside a set window before the end date. The end date is not the deadline. The notice window is.

How auto-renewal works
An auto-renewal (also called an evergreen clause) extends your term, sometimes for a full new term, if neither side cancels in writing within the notice period. The renewed rate may be the old rate or the carrier's current list rate. Read your own contract for the exact terms; they vary by carrier and agreement.
How to stop an auto-renewal
- Find the clause. Look for "renewal," "term," "evergreen" or "notice" in the master agreement and each service order.
- Work out the deadline. End date minus notice period. Add a buffer for carrier processing.
- Send notice in writing the way the contract requires (email, letter or portal). Keep proof that it was delivered.
- Line up options first. Notice without a plan can leave you on month-to-month rates. Compete the service before or alongside the notice.
- Track every site. Multi-location businesses often have dozens of separate renewal dates.
What to have on hand
- Signed master agreement and every service order
- Service start dates and term lengths
- Account numbers and the address the carrier requires notice to go to
- Current bills to compare against market pricing
