How The MPLS Network Works And Its Advantages


The Multiprotocol Label Switching or MPLS network is a set of rules that points in a communication connection employ during communication for providing and managing backbone networks. It uses a mechanism whereby data in a network is transported based on short path labels rather than long addresses. These networks may be data oriented, voice oriented or both. Data oriented networks include internet service providers while voice centered networks include old telecommunication industries. Networks that involve both data and voice include modern telecommunication industries that mostly deal with mobile telephony. Multiprotocol Label Switching was not intended to replace Internet Protocol routing but rather works alongside it to improve data forwarding speeds in routers.

It develops a model that uses the internet protocol to transport data across networks. It uses a method known as label switching to transmit data packets. This is done by assigning labels to packets and forwarding the packets based on the value of the label. The packets are then routed based on the value of the label and forwarded to an outside interface with a new label. A packet is data broken down into smaller pieces to facilitate transmission.MPLS can also be used in networks that are not packet oriented. Here, paths followed by data are still dependent on the labels assigned to the data. This is because these labels are protocol independent. These non-packet labels are used to set up connections through which the data can be transmitted without undergoing inspection.

Data transmission can be from a point or a node to any other node in the network. These nodes that normally lie at the edge of networks are connected through virtual links or tunnels. This increases the transmission response time. It also improves the performance by cushioning against an entire network failing due to failure in one node.

It uses traffic engineering which greatly improves the quality of service. Traffic engineering enables prioritization of data transmission. Data with low priority is transmitted over a low priority path while real time data such as voice with high priority is transmitted over high priority paths with low congestion and high speeds. This ability to control transmission of data minimizes congestion and ensures real time data transmission is efficient and reliable.

Multiprotocol Label Switching was designed to guarantee high quality of service in the networking industry. It works using a failure survival mechanism whose main purpose is to minimize disruptions that occur when data transportation fails. Packets with already assigned labels should not be disturbed during recovery of the failure. Packets are therefore not discarded but rather use cross connecting paths for transmission.

The MPLS network has numerous benefits. In case of failures, operators now have the option of routing traffic through different paths. This has greatly improved the quality of services provided by operators through better management of data streams. Disaster recovery has also been made faster by developing models with multiple redundant connections.
